Scarecrows and Servants

Over the last week or so we have begun to read another class novel together.

I took a handful of old favourites into school at the start of last week which included The Scarecrow and his Servant,  a great book by Phillip Pullman-author of the Dark Materials Trilogy. Fraser noticed this book in amongst the other’s that i had brought and pleaded with me to choose that one!

I don’t think that the rest of the class are disappointed! They are thoroughly enjoying the twists and turns of the plot and have already done some wonderful Literacy and Artwork based on the first few chapters that we have read together. You can see some of the childrens work displayed in the school hall at the moment.

I hope some of the class will be adding to the class blog and to their own entries to tell you more about our current work soon.

By the way, you may notice a new tab on our class blog. The maths tab is there to give you an overview of the wide ranging mathematical content that years four and five have been covering this year in class.

Keeping all the balls in the air!

So much seems to be happening with our class all the time, that we suddenly find that we haven’t told you about it in our blog! Luckily Connor, Leia,  Fraser and Kelly keep quite a few of our “balls in the air”!

Our penfriends in Morocco have sent us wonderful letters and craftwork that they’ve made for us which is lovely. I was really excited to hear from their teacher the other day on Instant Messenger that his class had received our replies.

We are enjoying alsorts of exciting and stimulating work in class at the moment. We are continuing to study a Visual Text in literacy which some of our class bloggers have already referred to -It is a wonderfully evocative film called The Piano.

In science our work on Habitats and Lifecycles was much enhanced by a garden visit when the class went pond dipping and minibeast hunting at Lark Rise (Mrs Stott’s house).

Holiday Time!

Hey -it feels so good to be looking forward to a holiday!

We have had a realy happy busy term and everybody in the class has really worked so hard! Work about Allie’s journey across the ocean from Australia has gone really well. The beautiful Albatross art work in our classroom is wonderful. Come and have a look!

Yesterday when I was at a teachers course, Class 3 were very lucky to work with Mrs Fridholm/ Mrs Clarke who helped the class to make some stunning minibeast mobiles. They are hanging up in Class 3 !

Today we had an exciting experience when we took our Samba band to Springfields in Spalding to join with about 8 other schools in a Samba abd Singing event organised by SOUNDLINCS and the Lincolnshire Music Service. I was really pleased with the way our children performed. Did you enjoy yourselves?

Tonight we have had discos in school for the younger and older children. Almost all of our class seemed to be at the disco and everyone managed to win a raffle prize too!

Now it’s time for a rest, but don’t forget to keep an eye on the website and comment on anything you think is interesting!

abel

Hello I am Abel. Once I was in the garden, netting the strawberries. I heard a crack and then a scream.

I went to get the bible so that if it was Hattie, she could swear not to climb the tree house again. I think it was Hattie.

I went to get my boots and then I ran as fast as I could. I fell over a branch that had fallen from the tree. I saw Hattie lying on the ground with blood coming from her neck.  I looked

and saw pieces of wood on the floor on top of Hattie. I moved the broken wood off her. I picked her up and took her inside. I turned and said to the boy BE GONE!!!!BE GONE!!!!

dead or alive

I was in the garden and I heard a crackle and then a scream and I ran to see what had happened but my heel of my shoe came off. Then I fell over.   Hatty was pale and there was a  blood stain on her pinafore and dripping from Hatty’s forehead. Hatty had a big cut on her head. Tom came over and I said to Tom “Get gone with you !”

I was really cross to Tom. Then Tom, that boy Tom came to see Hatty!

me as abel

1882 June

                           Wednesday

I saw that Hatty was just about to climb the wall so I pulled the Bible out of my pocket and pushed Hatty down on the floor until she was on her hands and knees,

“Hatty swear on the Bible that you will never ever climb that wall” I said. In the end I made Hatty swear, so I put the Bible back in my pocket and I walked away.

                           Thursday

A bright summer’s day, I went out picking the delicious red strawberries putting each one into the trug. Suddenly my world changed into shock horror, I heard a crackle and then Hatty screamed so loud I thought that thunder was going to strike any second. I ran towards the sun dial, I saw Hatty sitting there with a trickle of blood peeping down her forehead and splodges of blood on her apron I went to help her I took her back into the house and I actually saw Tom, “Go away; you’re just a devil from hell. Just leave this place,” I shouted furiously to Tom then I just walked away without another word.

Hatty falls

I was putting some nets on the strawberries to keep the birds from eating them. I had found out where Hatty was she was building a tree house with that strange boy. I didn’t have a clue who he was. Then all of a sudden I heard a crack then I heard Hatty scream. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me. My boots were slowing me down then my heel broke! I ditched the boots and then a stray cat ran in front of me I dodged it and ran. I had a thousand thoughts running through my head - they were all bad but the worst one was if Hatty was dead!

When I finally got there Hatty was on the floor. For a second I thought she was dead! But then I saw her breathing. I quickly prayed to my bible. Then I picked her up and said to the strange boy “You’re a devil child. I’ve seen you! You’re the one that made Hatty fall. Stay away from her!” Then I ran inside with Hatty.

Abel

I was putting the strawberry net on the bush because of the birds. They took it off. Then I heard a crack, then a cry, and then I heard a scream. I went running to see what had happened, then I realised it was Hatty so I ran as fast as I could. Then I found Hatty. She was very pale and there was a trickle of blood running down her face. I saw that boy that I thought was a ghost. I said to the ghost “Off with you!” The ghost was very surprised for some reason and I said to him “Go back to hell where you belong!” He went away alright. After that I concentrated on Hatty. I said to Hatty “Can you hear me?” but there was no answer.

Dead or alive?

I was in the garden putting the strawberry nets on the strawberry beds when I suddenly heard a crack! So I ran to try to find out what was going on and then I heard a slight squeal of fright; so I began to speed up my running. Then I heard a scream so I sprinted as fast as I could. I finally found where the noises were coming from. I saw Hatty lying on the ground with blood dripping from her forehead and she had a bloodstain on her pinafore. I thought I should move her so I picked her up and began to take her inside. The boy followed so I shouted “Get gone, get gone!” and I called him the “devil boy”. Was Hatty dead or alive?

New Characters in the story.

Watch this space for new writing about the characters in our story-Abel the gardener is coming up soon. Connor and Elliott have written splendid accounts of Abels actions when Hatty fell from her tree house.

Tom’s Midnight Garden

Here are some pieces of writing based on character’s in our class novel.
Hatty is a young girl  with whom Tom strikes up a friendship as he explores the garden.

Hatty by Emily

Well I don’t really know how to start, umm I’ll start here……… I was in the garden, that’s the normal part of my story. Now I will tell you the not so normal part. I was playing in the garden as usual with my cousins. They were running away from me again, then suddenly there was a boy. he had thick brown hair and he was in his night-wear! I know for a fact that he didn’t see me. One time I saw him walking through a door! I mean how can you walk through a door?

And he found my secret tunnel. So I decided to go and meet him. “Hello” I said, “Who are you ?” he said.

“I’m Hatty,  and over there are my cousins”. “I know ” he said, but how did he know?

From then on I played with him whenever I saw him. And we went inside the greenhouse. One day I showed him how to make arrows and he showed me how to make bows. I wasn’t strong enough to bend the wood. He was a bit upset because he couldn’t play. If he held the bow or arrow it fell through his hand.

I told him all my secrets even after I’d told him I wouldn’t. When we were playing with the bows and arrows I accidentally shot the fifth arrow on the greenhouse roof. Luckily Abel the gardener fixed it. Well there you are…..that’s part of my long long story.

An Exciting Time in Class 3

We are having a really exciting time in Class 3 at the moment. We have started our new term with a brilliant new Class novel-Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce.
It is quite hard to ration ourselves to one chapter a day and we are all really enjoying the tantalising way that the author writes this wonderfully evocative adventure story.
The children have already produced some thoughtful descriptive writing and detailed artwork based on the story so far.

Nine to ninety

school-camera-025-for-blog.jpg

I had the great pleasure of visiting Mrs Stott’s classroom and meeting her children; Emilia, Connor, Jordan, Fraser and all the others were extremely polite and very friendly.  They made me feel very welcome, and obviously enjoyed all that they were doing.

Many had just changed library books at the mobile library van, which apparently visits fortnightly.

For me, to visit a school (because I had worked with this age range, but very many years ago) and to see how very different things are today - my old school was a happy environment, but seemingly not quite so friendly and relaxed, and of course computers were not at all in use, therefore so much was different  - an important difference was the use of the white board to share information with the whole class so quickly.

Friday,  November 23rd 2007 will be a memorable date for me.

A man knocked on my door…

A man knocked on my door and said that I had to move out of Aunty Meg’s house! “No rush” he said “you can stay for a couple of months.” When he left I felt as if I had to leave my old life behind.

Immediately I took the animals to Marty’s hill and tried to make them go. The last one to go was a joey. I moved out the next day.

I got a job as a fisherman. I did not like it, I hated to see them suffer. All we wanted to do was earn a living.

One night we went out gambling. When I got out of that casino I had no money. In the night I decided that I wanted to quit. So the next morning I went to look for a job. I found a job in the navy. It sounded perfect. Near the sea was all I wanted.

Arthur leaves the Farm

When I heard the news that I had to move, I felt so alone and disappointed. I wondered where I would go.

I knew what I’d do with the animals. I sold the goat to next door and before long all the animals left as well.

Then a couple of days later I left. I didn’t look back, not once. I felt like I was leaving my whole life behind. I went to visit Mart’s and Anty Meg’s hill one more time.

I cried tears of distress. I was distraught. By the time I had left, my tee shirt was soaking wet.

I knew where I was going next. I was going to Sydney.

Hello

Here we are in November! Where does the time go? In Class 3 we are now enjoying another story by MIchael Morpurgo.

It is all about the life and adventures of two orphans who get sent to Australia during the Second World War. The start their adventures on board ship, then they live in a cruel orphanage at a farm called Coopers Station. When theyt manage to escape they are taken in by a kind lady they call Aunty Megs.

As they grow up she sends them off to a friend of hers in Sydney where they live on a boat and learn the art of boat building. We are all enjoying the book and are on the edge of our seats each time we read a new chapter!

Visitor

Just recently a man called Peter came to visit and he told us about life here during World War II. He had a job helping the farmers and he slept in class three on a hessian sack filled with as much straw as possible.

The story of Adolphus Tips

We have been reading stories by Michael Morpurgo and we’ve just finished reading the amazing story of Adolphus Tips; now we’re learning about World War 2.

Do you know about World War 2? If you do, send a comment and help us out!

Memories of our Locality

willow-way-midsummer-day-022-small.jpg

This term we shall be doing quite a lot of work about life in the local area. At the moment we are concentrating in the way World War Two affected the lives of children and it would be wonderful to have any anecdotes or reflections, memories and stories about life in and around Shepeau Stow during the period of the second world war.

If you or any of your friends and relatives can add to our research we would be delighted to hear from you. The picture you can see is of “The Willow Way” a footpath that leads directly from the end of Queen’s Bank to Shepeau Stow. I wonder if it has changed much in 60 years?
